Once A Month!

After the holidays were over it was back to chemo. I got to take a mini-vaca and skipped one round, 6 weeks without chemo. It was oh so lovely! I had a transfusion the week before I left to make sure my counts stayed up while T and I were in Indiana. When I left, my hemoglobin was 11 and my platelets were 124,000! (less than the normal range but much higher than my normal counts) Once we returned from Indiana I had my counts rechecked to make sure I didn't need another transfusion before chemo. And the great news is- I didn't!! My counts were the same- both were still high! That means the chemo is destroying my blood and platelets and not the cancer cells in my bone marrow! My bone marrow is working- it's fighting back! (When I was diagnosed, the cancer had spread to my bone marrow making it stage 4 or metastatic carcinoid syndrome). Dr. Chahin decided to move chemo to every 4 weeks instead of every 3! Once a month! A whole extra week of freedom! I will still need transfusions in between rounds. (I actually had to get a bag of platelets yesterday- they were down to 4,000. And my hemoglobin was down to 7.4 but I'm going to wait till next week to get that transfusion since chemo isn't until the week after. I want to make sure my counts stay high for that.) I feel so blessed- God is to thank for this great news. He is working His wonderful power in me and I am forever grateful to Him. Our God is an awesome God!

Also, my momma is back at home and recovering well. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Jeez...that took me forever to figure out. Chemo kills dividing active cells...ie for you killing the cells your bone marrow is making, not the cancer. Cancer not growing, Bone marrow stepin' up its game :) Shew..think i pulled a muscle! (my brain is jello at this point!) ~e

Your strength and good news is an inspiration. My grandmother had cancer last Christams and was not given very long to live. Being 82 it was a difficult decission but she fought it and won. Sadly it has retruned and she says she doesn't have the strength to do it all over again. So now we wait....
But you, well your young and from your post are stronger than ever. I just found your blog and look forward to reading more good news. It's nice to hear there are still happy endings in the world.

God Bless, Lisa

Alison, I am so happy that your blogs are getting more and more uplifting. I pray for you every single day and check your blog almost daily. I just wanted to let you know that, and that you're in my thoughts and prayers. :) Also, LOVE the picture a day idea. I may be too late for 2008, but I plan to do that at some point in my life definitely. I am glad you are doing well--and I'm so incredibly happy that you have so much support.
