Warning- Gas Pumps

My sister Rene's boyfriend Chad had a very scary accident yesterday. He was at the gas station pumping gas and was had set the handle to use the automatic setting so you don't have to stand there to hold it. The handle got stuck and would not stop- gas started spilling out and got all over his shorts. He got back in the truck to head home to change. As soon as he got in, he shorts caught fire!!! He jumped out and ran as far as he could from the gas pumps and was trying to put it out. It just kept getting worse so he striped down naked to get the burning clothes off! Once the fire was out he put his clothes back on and jumped back in the truck to drive himself to the hospital- about a 15 minute drive. He called my sister on his way who of course was hysterical. Luckily my dad was at home to drive Rene and the girls to the hospital. The girls had extra car seats to put in his truck as their normal ones were in Chad's truck. He suffered 2nd degree burns on his upper left thigh and behind his leg at the bend. The truck was fine expect for a minor little burn to the steering wheel. They have to contact a plastic surgeon today. His bandages have to be changed twice a day which my sister said she could stomach. I'm not so sure I could do the same. Chad is very lucky he didn't suffer more damage then he did. As a great lesson from this, please think twice before setting the gas handle to the automatic setting. This could have happened to anyone! They did go back to the gas station after he was released from the hospital to file papers. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and he's in a great amount of pain. I will keep you posted on his status.

By the way- it happened at the New Paris Shell station. Some of you fellow Hoosiers will know where I'm talking about....

In other news, today is chemo week. I'm waiting now to start. They are two nurses short so it's taking a little longer than usual. I'm trying to stay positive and upbeat about this week but I'm feeling really anxious. Which seems to be a reoccurring thing these days. I'm not sure what I'm so nervous about but I really wish it would go away.

Wow - that is very scary and something that you would never think that would actually happen. I'm glad he wasn't injured any worse than he was. Yikes!

Why did they catch on fire? Does he smoke? Oh my wow, he's very lucky. I saw firemen spraying down a car with foam at the gas station last night. Jan

Yeah, How did they catch fire? From the static electricity they warn you about? Unbelievable!

Deep breaths this week through chemo... you can do it.

Like I wrote you in my email... I fill up at that gas station just about every fill up! I will definitely not use the automatic fill. Your sister's boyfriend is SO lucky! Wow...

As soon as he got in the truck he started on fire so they think it was static!

Oh my goodness! I can see some major jokes about tht down the road. However, for the time being, hope the poor guy feels better. That gas station is luck he had the wits about him to get away from the pump. Later!
