My dad called me tonight to let me know my step-mom is in the hospital and probably is not going to make it. She has been sick for some time now but you're never really prepared for that call.
Growing up, N was the stereotypical 'Evil Step-Mom'. She treated my sisters and I like crap. We lived in fear of her and my dad never stood up for us. As we grew older though, and she retired and soon after become ill, she liked us. And I forgave her for being such a witch in my childhood (and my dad for being a jerk). I'm not sure my sisters have and I wish they could learn to let it go- but I understand- everyone deals in different ways. I think I've allowed myself to forget most of it. I love my dad too much to let it come between our relationship now that he/we are making an effort to have one- and are doing pretty good at it. I feel so sad for him in this hard time. N's three sons and their wives are with him and that brings me comfort. Please keep him and N in your prayers tonight.
